The Round-up is an occasional anthology of pieces by writers I admire who play the daily Artwiculate word-game on Twitter.
By TheSupercargo
(Tweeting as @TSupercargo)
————————————————
Internecine: Mutually destructive or ruinous; of or relating to slaughter or carnage in warfare; of or involving conflict within a country, an organisation, a group, a family. [The word derives from the Latin internecīnus meaning slaughter, exterminate, massacre. The "inter-" prefix is here used as an intensifier. In his dictionary, however, Dr Johnson misinterpreted "inter-" to mean between, and defined the word as meaning "endeavoring mutual destruction", a sense it continues to have today.]
————————————————
Greetings! There’s no internecine struggle between @TheSupercargo and his alter ego. We are agreed about delivering the following round-up!
As ever, the Artwiculati produced an interesting crop of Artwicutweets – if not quite as many as with other WOTDs.
In my long-list, I find I have been particularly impressed by @marcosarroyos’s contributions and also by @TiddK’s and @Helacious’s too.
But, sticking to my principles, it’s only 1 tweet for each person nevertheless. (Still, you can always go and look at their profile pages.)
As most player’s surely know by now, the WOTD is one of those lexicographical gems that … well I’ll let @chemingineer tell it
RT @chemingineer Samuel Johnson defined internecine wrongly in his great dictionary and the rest is history. #artwiculate
Regardless of what it OUGHT to mean, what it means now is mutually destructive struggle. @NeelaVanam defined it with a cinematic reference
RT @NeelaVanam ‘The Godfather’ revolves around the internecine warfare of a mafia family. #artwiculate
@alex_auron took us back to the Cold War
RT @alex_auron Internecine: mutually assured destruction, or simply MAD.
And @poemblaze1 reached back to World War One
RT @poemblaze1 The great houses of Europe ~ launched their internecine war ~ after two shots in a Sarajevo street. #micropoetry #artwiculate
(And @marcosarroyos went all the way back to Cain and Able – but I’m not quoting that one!)
@fox2go gave us a Machiavellian poem
RT @fox2go #haikuchallenge #artwiculate Absentee leader; internecine dark squabbles; Machiavelli’s back
@MissKayenne referenced the on-going political struggle in the USA
RT @MissKayenne ~ Republican or ~ Democrat? Internecine ~ In United States ~ // #artwiculate #haiku
But whoever wins the battle, what kind of a victory can it ever be? @SJHatzi knows
RT @SJHatzi Internecine win: a Pyrrhic victory.
Another aspect of the word, of course, (touched on in some of the previous quoted tweets) is the close, familial sense it includes.
RT @micahpedia With my family any kind of reunion always ends up an internecine fracas. #artwiculate
(Mine too, @micahpedia, mine too!)
And with another filmic reference, @ariandalen reminds us of school days. Well, JK Rowling’s school days perhaps.
RT @ariandalen “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Talk about your internecine conflict! #artwiculate
(Oh, and while we’re referencing films, I’ll shoehorn in my chosen @marcosarroyos tweet for the day)
RT @marcosarroyos Internecine : Italian for an intern in film making.
Of course, some people have relationships that appear to be nothing more than struggle, as @Tralala56 points out
RT @Tralala56 Many thought of Madge and Tim’s relationship as internecine, little did they understand the thrill that it procured and the bond it created.
To which @Nickpbonwick counters with this
RT @Nickpbonwick It was never really love / At times obscene / There was no truth / purely internecine
@TiddK shared a story of thwarted love
RT @TiddK Tweedledum and Tweedledee ~ Both fancied the same girl ~ Their internecine rivalry ~ Saw tragedy unfurl ~ (she joined a nunnery)
(It doesn’t matter who won – both lost. harking back to Silia’s Pyrrhic victory.)
@sgwarnog gave us another illustrative image
RT @sgwarnog bush shudders ~ with internecine chatter ~ sparrows jostling ~ for the best ~ perch #artwiculate #gogyohka
In human terms that bush of sparrows become @dsceiorg’s collective of female impersonators
RT @dsceiorg Collective nouns: An elaboration of costumes; A spackle of cosmetics; An internecine of drag queens #artwiculate
[When the dust settled, it was this tweet that had won the crown.]
And it seems somehow appropriate to follow with this from @beezknez
RT @beezknez Internecine ~ cant beat fashion #artwiculate
@CreoleEloquence had a thought to share about internal struggles which neatly introduces the third focus of many of today’s tweets.
RT @CreoleEloquence Internecine strife between her memories and her greying head made for a ghastly crinkly retro 70′s-style updo this morning.
While @ultracutebot identified another internal struggle which I imagine many of us recognise
RT @ultracutebot whenever i try to stop tweeting for the night, an internecine scuffle between my practical side & my lexicon-crack addicted side ensues…..
I’m going to finish off with a rush of different Artwicutweets that I’m too tired to fit into catagories – but I liked them.
First is @harrarp’s medicinal usage
RT @harrarp Someone told me I need to get my head examined. There were days when I took that kind of advice seriously. Now I use internecine.
Then @LorcanDesperado’s glittering title
RT @LorcanDesperado Internecine is a many splendoured thing #LesserBooks
Another book, this one from @mazpowles
RT @mazpowles The runaway bestseller ‘He’s Just Not That Internecine’ is a self-help book for compulsive pacifists.
@helacious asked a pertinent question
RT @helacious Do mercenaries apply for internecine internships before becoming professional warriors?
And @honeygloom expresed a (slightly disturbing) delight in the feel of the word
RT @honeygloom Slaughter is a messy word, bludgeoned, splattered. Internecine cuts like a slick blade.
I wonder who @runheidi is describing here … the name Margaret Thatcher drifts into my head, but that probably dates me.
RT @runheidi Her pastimes include hate-mongering and internecine strife. I’m sure she’ll have a long and rewarding political life. #artwiculate
RT @essence_me Internecine was a great band, with the loudest rocking mayhem on stage but they broke up after every gig and could never finish the tour
Yeah, @essence_me, they were great … if you once managed to see them!
Loved the following from @bookdreamer
RT @bookdreamer The Internecine were the militant arm of the Franciscans #artwiculate
And let’s finish with some fruit from @FrankSiddarta …
RT @FrankSiddarta The Wars of the Peach and the Nectarine were brutal – but the desserts were truly internecine
… and some more from @languagenhumor …
RT @languagenhumor British “limey” sailors replaced the earlier “peachy” ones, who were victims of internec(tar)ine violence. #artwiculate (internecine)
… and a drink in bar at Salon Artwois with @I2Haiku
RT @I2Haiku Our internecine drink of the day is a Bloody Mary. #Artwiculate
Cheers!
Well, folks, that was another round-up from @TheSupercargo and his DoppelJohn.
Greetings to newcomers to the round-up @poemblaze1, @MissKayenne who have both been playing the game for awhile and especial greetings to @sgwarnog who has just fallen into the ant-lion sand-pit we call Artwiculate.
That’s all from me for this time. Good night!

Splendiferous: Beautiful, splendid (jocular)
————————————————
Greetings, good Artwiculati! Here’s @TheSupercargo’s ever so slightly more splendiferous alter ego returning for a glittering new round-up.
I’ve been away too long, but the faucets of wit at Artwiculate have clearly been running at full force without me.
Today’s crop of tweets responding to the WOTD is no exception, and I found plenty to tickle my fancy (as the actress said to the bishop).
Setting aside @bookdreamer opinion …
RT @bookdreamer Splendiferous is a word used by drunkards or Americans and not by a true born Englishman who will say,if pressed, ‘It is fine.’ #artwiculate
[An opinion which nevertheless won him the crown!]
… I detect three trends among today’s tweets. The ones that delighted in the WOTD and tried to use it seriously, the ones that delighted in the WOTD and tried to use it comically, and the ones that spotted the almost ferrous nature of the last part.
For example, @micahpedia’s old-school usage:
RT @micahpedia The leather jacket studded with meteoric iron was absolutely splendiferous. And splendiferrous. #artwiculate
By ‘old-school’ I mean @micahpedia goes to the trouble of spelling out the difference. Here’s a tweet from @JohnnyMacOne by contrast.
RT @JohnnyMacOne #splendiferous – when you accidentally put iron filings in your coffee instead of sweetener #artwiculate
There were several tweets that referenced popular culture too. This next from @chemingineer, is one of those, but also a ferrous tweet.
RT @chemingineer All the iron in spinach failed to make Popeye a splendiferous personality. #artwiculate
Continuing in same vein, here’s @coinopratdchris and another Toon
RT @coinopratdchris What does Sylvester the Cat say when he’s in a good mood? “Splendiferous succotash!”
@bjornelvin is obviously inspired by Potter-fever, but note the clever reference to two very different characters played by Ms Bonham-Carter in two very different films.
RT @bjornelvin Splendiferous! said Hermione, and instantly, Bellatrix turned into the Queen of Hearts. #artwiculate
(And wasn’t she GOOD in that second role?)
One more popular literary/artistic reference, from @lagadu123 this time
RT @lagadu123 Roald Dahl + Quentin Blake = splendiferous
Now we leap back across the Atlantic (and back up to date) with a pop-cult tweet from @marcosarroyos
RT @marcosarroyos Splendiferous? Sounds like the name of a high school drop-out from New Jersey on a reality TV show.
I think this one from @FrankSiddarta may count as a pop-cult reference too … though I have it catagorised as a “twisted quote”.
RT @FrankSiddarta Hi. You don’t think my ass looks *too* splendiferous in this thong, do you?
As long as the thong isn’t twisted, I suppose. (And let’s hope it’s not a dip’thong. I still shudder at learning that one!)
In another quote-tweet, @BurningHawk1969 shared his philosophy with @lagadu123 (at least, I think that’s what he was doing.)
RT @BurningHawk1969 @lagadu123 live fast, die young and leave a splendiferous corpse. #artwiculat
It’s winter up here in the northern reaches of the northern hemisphere – which stimulated a few of the more serious tweets. For example, this from @minibtweet (which I noticed has been a particularly popular RT today)
RT @minibtweet Crisp winter days ~ uniquely designed snowflakes ~ sculpted icicles such a splendiferous time of year! #Artwiculate
And with a certain holiday coming up, @kings_indian had a nice rhyme play
RT @kings_indian When splendiferous met coniferous it snowed on dec 25th
But just as clearly our weather conditions up here are not shared all around the world. @NeelaVanam gave us a spring tweet
RT @NeelaVanam It rains its kisses on the earth, the first rain of spring. Splendiferous is the smell of earth. #artwiculate
Meanwhile @Ameeee, experimenting with the anagram potential of the WOTD, gave us something I feel suffused with Australian summer
RT @Ameeee Sin / Surf / Eloped / Splendiferous
We play with words and use our imaginations as much as our dictionaries, don’t we? Here’s @helacious reporting from a new era
RT @helacious The creatures of the Splendiferous Era had sequins in place of scales; the eggs they laid were nothing less than golden.
And @pn8r with a snip from the biography of a time traveller (maybe)
RT @pn8r He had memories of things yet to be. Splendiferous things. Troubling things. If only the straitjacket didn’t itch so much…
@19ish believes in giving a voice to the voiceless inanimate – though what they might say is …
RT @19ish Superciliously splendiferous: The diamond calling the cubic zirconium “merely coruscating!” #artwiculate
We often find ourselves reflecting on the game, of course – what highfalutin literary critics call metafiction. Today’s word brought us an amusing little exchange (I thought) between two of the great Clan Powles @bripowles & @JonPowles
RT @bripowles To be honest, I find this game pretty weird, but the absence of anything else more important to do is splendiferous.
RT @JonPowles To be honest, I find this game pretty splendiferous, but the absence of anything else more important to do is borderline psychotic.
The rhyming potential of today’s was a challenge, but one that several rose to. Here’s @alex_auron
RT @alex_auron High society decried her in a manner so vociferous. / Her impasse? She called a platypus / “splendiferous”. #haiku #artwiculate
And @Elixir_V gave us this rhyming mnemonic
RT @Elixir_V The 7 stages of drunkenness: marvellous, amorous, splendiferous, vociferous, dangerous, murderous, cadaverous #artwiculate
Though @beezknez was ready to champion the stimulation of alcohol (and other substances).
RT @beezknez Many a splendiferous thing happens ~ after I’ve had myself a couple of gins ~ a toke on the pipe ~ I see puffing dragons riding bikes
Well now, we are drawing towards a close and thought to end , not on a downbeat, but perhaps on a less flippant note.
To get there, first here’s another in @dsceiorg’s collection of collectives
RT @dsceiorg Collective nouns: A catastrophe of crises; A desperation of cries for volunteers; A splendiferous of heroes #artwiculate
@AaronLivingston had a thought to share about relativity
RT @AaronLivingston To the frog who was raised in a puddle, Even a ditch is splendiferous. #artwiculate
And let’s finish with two poems. First from @TiddK
RT @TiddK Yesterday, the sun rose. Then I met you. Today, a splendiferous pearlescent glow dances along the horizon, and I’m alive!
And finally a bit of French from @silverne (I’m not going to make a habit of this but I liked what Google Translator made of @silverne’s poem)
RT @silverne même des fleures divines ne seraient pas splendiferous comme toi. Quand tu es dans mes bras, je suis ravi comme un roi. #artwiculate
[Google's translation: even divine flowers are not as splendiferous [as] you. When you’re in my arms, I’m happy as a king. # Artwiculate]
That’s the end (or “Fin”)! It just remains to greet especially @bjornelvin & @NeelaVanam who are, I think, new to the round-up.
And Greetings also to @bripowles who is a newcomer to the game as well.
Handing you back to @TheSupercargo now. With splendiferous feliciations!

Draconian : Of or resembling a dragon (obsolete except in fiction and Artwicutweets); Very severe, oppressive or strict.
————————————————
Greetings, Artwiculati! Rather out of my and @TheSupercargo’s comfort zone this evening, working on a borrowed computer.
Nevertheless, the draconian pressure of my desire to tweet yet another RT round-up cannot be denied.
Today’s word gave us a fine collection of tweets to rummage among. Not surprisingly, Dragons were much in evidence.
My heart particularly went out to @TiddK’s dragon called Ian
RT @TiddK Ian the dragon was very sad. Whoever was going to be scared of a dragon called Ian? #DraconIan #artwiculate
And in @dsceiorg’s dungeon, we found Puff
RT @dsceiorg Perdiccas, we will need to switch to more draconian measures. “Yes, sir, I’ll get Puff. He is still in Honalee?†#artwiculate
@beezknez shared a sad tale about Drac
RT @beezknez Drac short for Dragon?had fallen off the wagon?Under Draconian law punishment was Community Service?Kitchen Hand for Vlad the Impaler
@Elixir_Z gave us a conversation between George and the Dragon
RT @Elixir_Z Come on, Dragon, let’s get a drink and talk about it, said St George. “I know a pub you’ll like – the measures are strictly draconian.”
@LBY3 envisioned draconarchy
RT @LBY3 @artwiculate Draconian: Why you’re pretty much doubly screwed if your country is run by dragons.
And is France perhaps a country run by dragons, @emmaexpress?
RT @emmaexpress The more draconian the rule, the more fun it is to break it. #canyoutellIliveinFrance? #artwiculate
RT @twilobite22 The draconian ruler was nothing but a darn icon. #anagram#3
@twilobite22 gave us three nice anagrams – that was my favourite.
@harrarp used the WOTD to reflect on current US political conditions
RT @harrarp For 50 points, fingers on the buzzer, who was the odd one out at the tea party: Draconian, Apollonian or Sarahpalian?
In respect of the dragons who rule @SJHatzi had this suggestion
RT @SJHatzi Anyone passing laws (draconian or not), or deciding to go to war should first be willing to test it on their first-born.
Nice idea, Silia, but I fear it will take a particulary draconian Old Testament God to make that happen
Finally in this sequence, @pegasuepy asked a pertinent question
RT @pegasuepy Draconian rules? Where is this place Draconia anyway?
Moving away from politics, @ariandalen drew our attention to the sleeping dragon beneath our feet
RT @ariandalen Buildings shake and sway ~ A draconian shudder ~ Dreaming in deep earth. #artwiculate #haiku
And (this is a bit of a lame segue, but chthonic means underworld so) @eilonwya10 shared the following
RT @eilonwya10 The chthonic appalls the Apollonian: too much bacchanalia makes them go all draconian. #artwiculate
Children and the WOTD seemed to go together as well, in school and out. Let’s kick off with @marcosarroyos
RT @marcosarroyos Conficius say: Children with draconian parents enjoy making trouble
And – a warning to just those parents from @alex_auron
RT @alex_auron Raise children in a draconian way; but don’t be surprised to see them grow scales and expel fire from their mouths at each other.
But children can be small dragons even without drac0nian parents as @mazpowles can testify
RT @mazpowles Kids are really draconian. I asked a class to design the ‘perfect classroom’ half of them had a dungeon with torture chamber. #truestory
On the other hand as several Artwiculati noted, teachers may also be draconic. Here’s @JonPowles on the subject
RT @JonPowles There was an English schoolmaster/whose rules were quite draconian/His nickname for his favourite cane/was “Roger, Old Etonian”
Literary children dipped their toes in the Artwiculate stream too, here’s a Potter-related tweet from @Tralala56
RT @Tralala56 Draco Malfoy was draconian about mudbloods. That’s what made him so dislikeable! #wellchosencharacternames
Definitions next, from @silverne, @Ameeee, @TOCSY1 and @asim7asim
RT @silverne Draconian : Days of depression #artwiculate
I liked @silverne’s because of the alliteration as well as the image which certainly strikes a chord with me
RT @Ameeee Draconian measures: Women’s clothing sizes.
RT @TOCSY1 Draconian dinner menu: Gruel and unusual punishment…
RT @asim7asim Draconian : cruelty of snakes. #artwiculate
And I liked @asim7asim’s because it reminds me the word for dragon and snake in the old Germanic languages is the same (Orm).
@19ish slipped a reference to The Bard into a funny slogan

RT @19ish At Draconian Drycleaning, if a spot won’t come out, we just cut it out! Out, damned spot! Out, I say! #artwiculate
[And won a crown in the process!]
And @BurningHawk1969′s Barbie made me think of Susan, DEATH’s granddaughter in the Discworld
RT @BurningHawk1969 Draconian Barbie chases the monster back under the bed and kicks its ass. #artwiculate
Here’s another literary reference from @helacious – brought a Swed-ish smile to my face.
RT @helacious Draconian standards in marching band. One bad day on the drums and I was out. The Girl With the Draggin’ Tattoo, they called me.
@FrankSiddarta gave us a comic image of a dragon girl
RT @FrankSiddarta I knew a girl, draconian – her heart made from zirconium – and when she spoke – her words aflame – in clouds of pure ammonium
While @Ysabeluna gave us a much more serious little love poem
RT @Ysabeluna \ i touch you \ i felt glass \ so close, yet remote \ you’re on my screen\ draconian pain\ #artwiculate #Gpoem #gogyohka
Finally I’ll wind up this round-up with @OsmarJardim’s plaintive tweet.
RT @OsmarJardim Yesterday macabre. Today draconian. And love, happiness, peace … when?
And on that note, I thank you all for your attention!
Greetings to occasional Artwiculator @pegasuepy who appears in the round-up for the first time.
Greetings also to @Elixir_Z – a newcomer to the game I believe.
That’s me done for today. Handing you back to @TheSupercargo now. (Exits pursued by dragons).

Amalgam: DEFINITION
————————————————
Greetings, Artwiculati. With 2 hours left, here comes another amalgam of RTs rounded-up by @TheSupercargo’s doppelganger.
Todays WOTD attracted a goodly collection of poems – some of them (in my humble opinion) very good indeed.
It was in particular the likeness in colour to silver and the associations with mercury that seemed to inspire you.
@Elixir_V saw starlight and snow
RT @Elixir_V Frozen starlight/ Falling on snow/ A silver amalgam #haiku
@honeygloom saw the morning pierced
RT @honeygloom Morning amalgam / lead stretched across quick silver / pierced with gold lancets #haiku #artwiculate
@beezknez saw the moon embraced
RT @beezknez The moon ~ in amalgam slip of silver ~ shines shy ~ embraced by his darkness ~ the night #artwiculate
And @DarkHaikuMoon saw a band between heaven and earth
RT @DarkHaikuMoon Amalgam between ~ heaven and earth ~ a sliver band ~ the fire of mercury ~ reflected
There were also some interesting thoughts on the subject of amalgamation. Some more serious than others:
@cyberhaikutoday – perhaps thinking of yesterday’s WOTD – looked to the End of it All
RT @cyberhaikutoday at the end / of life’s road / an amalgam of memories / to pillow / your head #amalgam #memories #gogyohka #micropoetry
@TiddK gave us a meditation on what it is to be human
RT @TiddK A human being: an amalgam of water, carbon, iron, copper, phosphorous, genius and love . #artwiculate
@faelora shared an ancronym
RT @faelora LIFE is an acronymous amalgam of Love, Incomprehensibility, Foolishness, and Exhilaration. #artwiculate
@Charm47 considered her family
RT @Charm47 / We are together / by fate / and by choice / this amalgam / my family / #gogyohka #artwiculate
[And with this tweet, @Charm47 took the Artwiculate crown of the day!]
And @Aphrodite44 had a perspective on thoughts
RT @Aphrodite44 Amalgam of thoughts // vying for my attention // sign says: Out to Lunch #haiku #artwiculate ‘amalgam’
And with that we move away from the more somber end of the spectrum
For some reason, the association of the WOTD and TEETH tended to bring out the comic in us
Not so much in @tama001′s seasonally relevant tweet
RT @tama001 in the pumpkins firelight / Trick or Treat ! / mouth-filling, candy amalgam . #lqw #artwiculate
But @Squawkingalah had another story about her Dad
RT @Squawkingalah Dad eschewed the amalgam and had them all out but this did make it harder to chew.
@minibtweet shared a touching tale
RT @minibtweet Mr Amalgam restored a bond of friendship with Miss Cavity #Artwiculate
Though @Wifsie had another story about Mr A
RT @Wifsie Mr. Amalgam’s sweet tooth is not easily filled. #artwiculate
@rasmusviking shared a small nightmare. (I like the ABBA rhyme there too Erik – deliberate?)
RT @rasmusviking @artwiculate Broke my tooth on a plate / And swallowed a filling / Dentist bill will be chilling / Amalgam I ate.
And @chemingineer very explicitly reached back to yesterday’s WOTD
RT @chemingineer In consenescence teeth need the support of amalgam. #artwiculate
AmalgamATE had its own set of admirers. Three I particularly enjoyed:
First @19ish’s horror haiku and @loqwatious contribution
RT @19ish Dined with Mercury / She’s gone! Amalgam-ater! / A harrowing meal! #lqw #haiku #artwiculate #horrorhaiku
Then @mazpowles short statement
RT @mazpowles Amalgam-ate whatever was in the fridge.
And last another report from @marcosarroyos’s very own Texas
RT @marcosarroyos The Amalgam 8 Cineplex always had a strange lineup.
@dmriver Shared a hope. (Thinking of mercury poisoned fish, maybe?)
[Exactly so, he says.]
RT @dmriver If dreams are an amalgam, let’s hope wishes ain’t fishes.
And @FrankSiddarta found a nice almost-anagram
RT @FrankSiddarta Malagram – an amalgam of poisonous words
@helacious reported on a new musical genre
RT @helacious Hortense’s band had gone beyond fusion into the realm of amalgam – an astonishing admixture of rock, jazz, and calliope music.
(And once again I thought Hilary @helacious had a particularly fruitful day. Do check out some of her other tweets!)
@hkfeaga went to the tomayto/tomarto barrel
RT @hkfeaga You say assemblage, I say amalgam. #sixwords
@ariandalen promoted another Mistress
RT @ariandalen Ah, Mistress Amalgam: she’ll be the perfect blend of what you desire and what you need. #artwiculate
And @I2Haiku promoted another Little Miss Doll
RT @I2Haiku The Little Miss Amalgam Doll comes with its own patchwork quilt. #Artwiculate
@eilonwya10 Reported (possibly from Hogwarts)
RT @eilonwya10 With mercury in retrograde, her mixtures turned to mucks; though her practices were hermetic, her skill at amalgam sucks. #artwiculate
@Tralala56 was with Magritte on That Train again
RT @Tralala56 As the train arrived in Amalgam, the two rails into the station converged into one.
And finally … @harrarp
RT @harrarp I amalgam. But aren’t we all?
Aren’t we all, indeed, Harry. I know I am!
And that’s the story, morning glory!
Greetings to game newcomers @cyberhaikutoday and @rasmusviking and to @Aphrodite44 who’s just started playing again after a long absence.
Handing back to @TheSupercargo now.

Rhetoric: the art of using language, especially public speaking, as a means to persuade; Meaningless language with an exaggerated style intended to impress
————————————————
Good evening, good people. (It’s evening again from my horizon.) And welcome to another RT round-up from @TheSupercargo’s alter ego.
Today we have well-nigh drowned in a sea of tweets masquerading as political rhetoric.
Still, I am pleased to be able to share a few pearls gleaned from the stream.
Not surprisingly, a good many tweets today commented on the OTHERs …
RT @chemingineer #artwiculate will be full of rhetoric and very little substance today.
Oh yes, @chemingineer, it certainly was!
A closer study of some of the non-Artwiculate (in some cases in-Articulate) tweets caused me to nod sagely at @19ish’s tweet.
RT @19ish When I use rhetoric, it’s scintillating & intelligent. When YOU use rhetoric, it’s bombastic bloviation! See the diff? #artwiculate
And @Calum_MacDonald put an ironic finger on a perspective that seemed to unite political tweeters of every pursuasion.
RT @Calum_MacDonald It may be Rhetoric but I mean every word #artwiculate
(Irony is a rhetorical trope BTW) Rhetoric in political mudslinging seems more a word of accusation than what Wikipedia describes as “the art of using language to communicate effectively & persuasively.” Sort of like:
RT @kado56 Hang out your dirty linen, oh loudmouths, display your rhetoric, grimy and dripping, mangled beyond recognition and hope to impress?
Or:
RT @wes_james My rhetoric is as follows: I utilize gargantuan idioms to fabricate intelligence. #artwiculate
Or indeed:
RT @nestersan One drop phenakism, two drops idealism, a pinch of melodrama, a cup of zeal, filter with lamprophony and you get pure distilled rhetoric
The second major focus of today’s Artwiculate tweets was the art of rhetoric itself.
One Big Name rhetorician was Demosthenes, he who spoke around pebbles to improve his diction – something @alex_auron found a tad ironic.
RT @alex_auron Demosthenes is my name; rhetoric is my life; how ironic then that I can’t even pronounce it!Now where did I put those pebbles? #artwiculate
@helacious (who had a another really good day in my opinion) gave this fine illustrative example of a rhet0rical phrase.
RT @helacious I have mastered rhetoric, so that it will not master me/And there you have an example of antimetabole!
And @rascality gave us another:
RT @rascality In love no less than in rhetoric, aposiopesis is simply bad manners. #artwiculate
@mazpowles suggested some rules for rhet0ric – not entirely tongue in cheek I think. May favourite was the third.
RT @mazpowles 3rd rule of rhetoric – if you can’t think of anything to say come up with a list of 3.
Three important aspects of rhet0ric appeared in two tweets. One from @JonPowles
RT @JonPowles The three musketeers of rhetoric were Logos, Ethos and Pathos. Hopeless fencers, but jeez they could talk a good sword fight
The other from @the7minutestar
RT @the7minutestar Rhetoric had 3 children: Ethos, the charismatic leader. Logos who loved to argue. Pathos, the emotional girl. #artwiculate
And Logic also made a solo appearance in @pn8r’s tweet here:
RT @pn8r And they’re off! Rhetoric, the reigning champ, has a commanding lead… but in a stunning turn of events, Logic actually wins for once!
I think @MaltaGoddess’s rhetorical question deserves a place here too.
RT @MaltaGoddess What part of spare me your jeremiad & miasmatic rhetoric transgressing upon my haecceity & omphaloskepsis do you not understand?
My one attempt at a tweet today played on the sound similarity of the WOTD with Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind.
I was not the only one.
RT @soarski Scarlett: Rhett… if you go, where shall I go, what shall I do? Rhetoric Butler: Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.
And
RT @dsceiorg Perdiccas, the prisoner is trying to fool us with rhetoric. “I love Clark Gable, but that won’t work on me.†#artwiculate

RT @twilobite22 Is a person spewing rhetoric a hot crier? Or one who can torch ire? #anagramX2
And @I2Haiku was talked into an expensive date
RT @I2Haiku Ms Rhetoric took me to a fancy French restaurant; I didn’t want to go, but she talked me into it. #Artwiculate
A number of non-players today seemed to be suffering from boring teaching. Their pain was felt by @LorcanDesperado

@Tralala56 shared the skeleton of a new reality show – one I’d like to see

I wonder who @runheidi can be talking about in this?
RT @runheidi As you listen to her rhetoric, consider yourself warned. The woman may seem human, but ‘neath the coif she’s horned. #artwiculate
@beezknez shared this evocative if rather sombre image
RT @beezknez You have gone to far ~ to be heard ~ there is only ~ the wear and tear ~ of your rhetoric ~ like a worn out welcome mat
To finish, two love poems. The first from @bookdreamer
RT @bookdreamer What words, what rhetoric, what sounds could capture the music of your walk, the honey of your lips, the fire of your eyes. #artwiculate
And from @TiddK
RT @TiddK Your rhetoric falls on deaf ears / Smooth words do not impress me / But when you kiss away my tears / That’s when I melt : caress me!
And that’s another round-up done and dusted!
Greetings to Artwiculate newcomer @wes_james, relative newcomer @alex_auron and established player but new to the round-up @nestersan
And a big Welcome back, mate! to @dmriver who has been sidetracked from the game by real life. (It rained – he’s been farming.)
That’s yer lot! About 2 hours left to tweet – and vote. Go to it, good Artwiculati! Handing back to @TheSupercargo now.

[Gulls]
On Monday 18th October the Word of the Day on Artwiculate was Diphthong.
Greetings, honourable listeners. Here I am again, TheSupercargo and his diphthong, offering another RT round-up.
In respect of today’s word, As @mazpowles observes …
Dear Artwiculate, Diphthong is going to be much more fun as a podcast.
I feel challenged and will be selecting tweets I think I have a hope of pronouncing successfully too.
Before we plunge into the vocal undergrowth, however, there are a few opinionated tweets to share. For example this from @tylercrea
There should be a diphthong in the word ‘diphthong.’
I agree! And I agree also with Hilary @helacious when she writes.
Tonight we honor paradoxical “diphthong,” who uses a mouthful of consonants to denote a mouthful of vowels.
Can we first agree with Silia @SJHatzi that, from one aspect at least, we’re looking at a grammatical function?
“Dialectal distribution of compensatory diphthongization is dependent on the velar/palatal dorsal plosive.” Grammar is SO sexy!
Yes, well, we’ll be back to visit the sex a bit later. But sticking to the grammar here’s a haiku from @cyberbonn
The Grammarian / alone with his diphthong / having a private moment.
Of course, I suppose you could argue that pronunciation is less a matter of grammar, more a matter of the mouth. Don’t you agree @drchavi?
The right use of the tongue, the jaws and the lips are all you and I need to make a diphthong click
Yes – um – there’s that sex thing again.
Some people narrowed in on the second element of the word. @I2Haiku for example …
Diphthong: a guy who wears a thong bathing suit because he thinks he looks good in it.
And @LucasWarwillow seems to have very strange taste in – er – food.
Definition of diphthong: Thong you dip in chocolate sauce when you get tipsy and can’t p-ph-phronounce anymore.
But of course, tipsy, who knows what one might find oneself doing. Not that I think @eilonwya10‘s lady is drunk necessarily
I’m just a beeyotch going for a swiiiium, she squealed when men admired her diphthong.
Well, we’re on the beach, so how about some geology? This is @TiddK‘s tweet:
Deep within the vowels of the earth is a diphthong.
And @pranavmukul‘s tweet has a geological touch too:
Diphthong : He came, he saw, he burst..he’s Eyjafjallajökull.
Also – now I think about it – a touch of sexual innuendo there too. No. no, not yet!
Geology to geography. Here’s @Eridanus:
A mere diphthong? The USA tried harder and founded the first and only Four-Letter Pentaphthong State: A-EE-O-OO-A — ah, Iowa!
Quick, get on @harrarp‘s train!
To get away from this consonant strive, we took the Diphthong Railroad to Ouénouaou, and let its vowels tickle our weary feet.
But, oh no! disaster threatens from @Tralala56
As the train rolled into Diphthong, there was a loud twang and a screeching aaaaaaeeeeeee as it came to an abrupt halt!
Phew, no harm done. But where are we? @ten_ten_ten?
In ‘ertford, ‘ereford and ‘ampshire, dip’thongs ‘ardly ‘appen @lagadu123
(In parenthesis, the ref to Jane @lagadu123 was a nod of thanks to her reminding certain players of the correct spelling – two hs. Let me take the opportunity to slip in Jane’s own tweet referring to her daughter who’d hijacked Jane’s account the day before
My daughter describes herself as an artwiculorphan. See how she put the “l” in to avoid an awkward diphthong? #maternalpride
Back to the script – ‘ertford, ‘ereford and ‘ampshire – )
Ah! Somewhere in England? Let’s check into @osmarjardim‘s hotel.
Diphthong Hotael . Vacancy.
Not that the receptionist sounds terribly British. Must be an immigrant. Accent combined with diphthongs can be a give-away as @rashasman observes:
The Diphthong is to Strine what a drawl is to the deep South, as mandatory as a warm evening breeze
I really doubt whether I can imitate either, though I fear I shall have to try at least once with Australian. Are you ready? Please forgive me Tracy @Squawkingalah
I’ve got a diphthong slap bang in the middle of my name (Tracy).
Whenever I try to imitate Strine, I tend to drift into Cockney. Anyway, here’s something even more difficult – the nasalised tilde
No, I’m sorry, @marcosarroyos I’m not going to attempt to combine Texan AND psuedo-Portuguese
Portuguese has a nasalized diphthong: Hõ nõ brõ cõ.
There are some more difficult to pronounce tweets coming up, but let me just share @19ish‘s short and sweet:
Meow! Diphthong! ‘Nuff said.
@gourenina had a nice definition.
Diphthong. Talking without any contact twixt upper and lower lip. “E-o! O a ou?”
@trtzbass approached languages I know something about in this one
Seaside tombstone: he was looking for the diphthong in maelstrom, but the ocean knows no mercy or phonetics.
(And by the by, some of these monickers don’t obviously seem invented to be spoken aloud! trtzbass)
@runheidi gave some advice for the actors’ studio
When modernizing tragedy, the diphthong is such fuss. Don’t call the old man Oedipus; just call him Eddy Puss.
And @BurningHawk1969 shared a moment from his kitchen.
Monday morning diphthong / epiphany’s two-toned scream / drowned by coffee’s buzz.
But there’s no getting away from it, an awful lot of today’s tweets had to do with sex. And Love, to be sure.
Here’s @kado56 being very subtle
Diphthong vowels lie side by side/ but dipthong vowels can oft elide/ quite distinct they combin-ate/ daemons to pronounci-ate
And @Wifsie, not by any means outdone.
For the ring of it all ~ two sounds converge ~ marriage by diphthong ~ breath taking fusion ~ a word is born.
@lyncon5 goes more to the point
My love and I are like a diphthong – back to back, together, not easy, but inseparable.
While @MaxRaunchiness is, well, Max.
Let’s try putting my diphthong together with your consonant cluster and see what sounds we can make.
@ariandalen takes us to meet
Ah, Mistress Diphthong: she’ll tell you the difference between “ae,” “ei,” and “ie.”
But the crowning tweet in this bunch must be the following from @Ysabeluna
\his soft silky sighs \in diphthong -s \ oy, oi, oui, oui, oui ! \ at peak ecstasy \sweet music to me, cheri\
There you have it, friends – @faelora screams …
Aiiiiiii, a diphthong! RUN FOR YOUR LIEEEEVES!
Erm. Now. There you have it! A breathless round-up.
There were SO MANY good tweets today. Several especially from @helacious, @harrarp and @19ish
Greetings to @tylercrea who doesn’t yet have a profile page, to @trtzbass @faelora & @lyncon5 all new players.
Greetings also to @gourenina @rashasman & @LucasWarwillow who’ve all been playing on and off for a while but only now debut in the round-up.
And, finally just for @osmarjardim – “Beowulf”
Cheerio!
Thank you for listening. And thanks to everyone whose words I borrowed. That was an exclusive podcast from John Nixon, TheSupercargo, for players of the Twitter-based words game Artwiculate, and for habitués of the Salon Artwois refuge for tweetworn Artwiculati.

Nugatory : Trivial, trifling or of little importance; Ineffective, invalid or futile.
————————————————
Greetings Artwiculati! Here comes another nugatory RT round-up from the being lurking in @TheSupercargo’s back-brain.
RT @ten_ten_ten ‘That’s a nugatory 10-4 good buddy, we got ourselves an artwiculate convoy!’
Thank you @ten_ten_ten! And what an apporpriate word it was for us to play with today. Don’t you agree?
RT @SJHatzi I’m with Michelangelo on the nugatory: “Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.”
Well, I suppose there IS another side to the coin, Silia. But I was thinking more of this …
RT @BurningHawk1969 What light dares to span / the gulf of nugatory life / Wasted on word games? #Haiku #LQW
There was an interesting sub-theme today (well, interesting for me as an expat Englishman)
RT @the7minutestar The Tory turned a mug upside down and uttered, “Nugatory – it’s empty!” #artwiculate
Tory = Conservative in British politics (for those not focused on our small corner)
RT @harrarp Let me tell you about the time when a nugatory and a nugalibdem formed a nugacoalition.
That was a nugatale and a half! Then @kings_indian countered with …
RT @kings_indian Me nugatory,you belabour #BritPolitics
And finally a proto-Texan (possibly from Essex) from @marcosarroyos’s cast of characters
RT @marcosarroyos The British hooligan overheard someone say nugatory, he thought she said, “mug a Tory,” so he did so right away.
Politics, eh! Where would we be without it?
I think @micahpedia gave us a description of a politician (but maybe my prejudices are showing)
RT @micahpedia His prose consisted of a bland outer layer with a nugatory filling
And @dsceiorg provided another instalment of his dictionary of collectives for the modern age:
RT @dsceiorg Collective nouns: A cacophony of political campaigns; A negotiation of platforms; A nugatory of promises #artwiculate
And in a deeper delve into US politics @CreoleEloquence gave us the #Shakespalin!
RT @CreoleEloquence What nugatory thought did move Caribou Barbie to equivocate herself to Shakespeare? #artwiculate #Shakespalin
Politics also involves statesmanship, something not always in evidence internationally.
RT @chemingineer The intransigence of the two warring parties threatened to turn the peace talks into a nugatory exercise. #artwiculate
Which can lead to papering over cracks or even using sticking plaster, as @beezknez pointed out.
RT @beezknez Band aids ~ for bullet holes ~ Nugatory ~ Cosmetics #artwiculate
Next, the similarity in pronunciation and spelling between the WOTD and Nougat, as in …
RT @TiddK I told Wanda the WOTD. She thought I said “Nougat, for me?” I didn’t have the heart to tell her No. I’m off to the shop. #nugatory
But remember …
RT @LorcanDesperado Nougat is not nugatory for those with decayed or loose teeth. #artwiculate
And (particularly – um – poignant for those of us with experience of them …)
RT @amanuel187 Nugatory? The inside of weight loss candy bars.
On the subject of food – er “food” – there were also a number of tweets that played with chicken nuggets. For example:
RT @Charm47 Nugatory…a plant where chicken nuggets are manufactured #artwiculate
The WOTD also plays a role in relationships between people.
RT @kuppilidivya nugatory : life looks nugatory without the person u love, in it !!!
But what if your love is not returned?
RT @mazpowles The real poignancy of unrequited love lies in the hours spent decoding each utterly nugatory word and gesture.
But if love is requited it may lead to – well, take it away @Ysabeluna!
RT @Ysabeluna \wedding,obligatory \honeymoon,mandatory \ marital squabbles,derogatory \divorce,statutory \reason for separation, nugatory \ #artwiculate
Oh, if only:
RT @lagadu123 What if the world’s population were a jigsaw, each of us a same-sized piece, of equal worth? No-one would be nugatory.
*sings* What a wonderful world that would be! *sings*
Are we getting into moral territory here? What’s that @helacious? Oh, right, not moral, ethical:
RT @helacious I took a course in Extreme Ethics, and most of my actions went from nugatory to supererogatory in a single week!
Apparently there really _is_ something called Extreme Ethics. I learn new things every time I do one of the round-ups.
And after life?

RT @kado56 Purgatory is for the Big Sinners, nugatory is for little ones
Though I doubt whether James Bond – or indeed Agent 000 – will be going there.
RT @Eridanus “There’s a plot to eliminate Agent 000, Bond.” “Agent Nugatory? A mere database default option!” “Precisely, 007. Investigate!”
Perhaps @coinopratdchris knows someone who can help Bond.
RT @coinopratdchris Look, Nugatory Man has arrived at the crime scene! Too bad the Competent Cadets already rounded up the villains!
Meanwhile, off Broadway (or Shaftsbury Avenue for people with a London horizon) …
RT @bwlightning Another flop at Nugatory Theatre- maundering about the stage, lost for lamprophony, like it’s all work & no play #artwiculate
Further into the surreal with @DrMobs
RT @DrMobs Game on tryout, /May not go true. /Too angry. Mute. /Not my outrage / Nugatory to me #anagrampoetry
Oh dear, this round-up is in danger of
RT @cyberbonn Spinning out of control in cyberspace, a black hole where nugatory tweets amass. #artwiculate
Quick, @osmarjardim! Help me drag it back.
RT @osmarjardim Nugatory is ~ Japanese short form poetry ~ nugatori is. #haiku
Erm …
RT @tama001 The adjective of Newgate is Newgatory (nugatory). #artwiculate
Well thanks for you help Miaou, but …
RT @TOCSY1 His nugatory swings on the tee led to a charge of feckless driving
Oh come on fellows, this is a serious word! A trivial one, to be sure, but – help me here @Tralala56
RT @Tralala56 When you’re young what people think of you is really important. When you’re old, it’s nugatory.
Ah, a breath of sanity!
We old people don’t care a jot what what other peopel think of us, do we @TheSupercargo? What do you mean “Speak for yourself”?
I want to close (for once) on a downbeat. I really liked this haiku from @bookdreamer
RT @bookdreamer nugatory life~empty bed, a silent phone~the tick-tock counted #haiku #artwiculate
Deep breath. OK my friends, that was the RT round-up for today.
Welcome to @micahpedia – a new to Artwiculate for this month it looks like. And greetings to @kuppilidivya, an occasional player, but first time collected in an round-up.
Thanks as ever to all the Artwiculati for providing me with the raw material for this.
Artwiculate says there’s still time to tweet, vote and RT, so I say: Go for it! Till next time, handing back to @TheSupercargo.

Dexterous : Skillful with one’s hands; Skillful in some specific thing; Right-handed (from original Latin – old fashioned); Opposite of sinister/left-handed.
————————————————
Greetings Artwiculati! Welcome to yet another selection of fine tweets, dexterously selected by @TheSupercargo and his sinister alter ego.
Artwiculate’s definition of todays WOTD, though it stressed the importance of skill, left out of the equations two important aspect but the Artwiculati were swift to correct the error. Indeed, of my favourite 21, by far the majority reference hands and left/rightness.
RT @19ish After the hand transplant, Dexterous discovered that two lefts DO NOT make a right! #artwiculate
Now I have a picture in my head of a botched hand transplant. That’s going to haunt my dreams tonight, @19ish!
RT @bookdreamer Dexterous Business Consultancy – for when your left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing
I think that’s a really business good name and slogan. Hope @bookdreamer thought to registered it.
RT @LBY3 @artwiculate Artwiculate victory tends to go to the dexterous, since they will make fewer typos with their cell hone keybaed.
Every normal sized adult who believes mobile phones are increasingly designed for the hands of young children, should vote for @LBY3′s tweet!
Opposable thumbs are, of course, one of those things that mark us out as primates, though mini mobile keyboards seem intent on erasing that.
You never know, soon other animals may be able to use the bloody things just as well, if not better.
RT @helacious My dexterous cat with opposable thumbs/Could count on his pawpads and do complex sums.
But perhaps we have only ourselves to blame. Taking up the computer keyboard so whole-heartedly in the first place. What have we lost?
RT @lagadu123 Used to love to write by hand / Fluidity of ink on page / Easy effortless characters / Dexterous – casualty of the keyboard age
And in our brains to – here’s a point to ponder from @osmarjardim
RT @osmarjardim “The rt half of the brain controls the left half of the body. Ths means that only left handed ppl R in their rt mind.†#dexterous
The right-and/or-left-hand issue can also be characterised (latinately) as the Sinister issue – as in the next tweet from @JonPowles
RT @JonPowles There’s nothing sinister about “dexterous”.
And it’s also hinted at in this one from @Ameeee
RT @Ameeee My right hand used to be far more dexterous, but my left hand has taken over, like an evil twin!
As a Swede (ish) I must also puff this from @ariandalen.
RT @ariandalen Let the Dexterous One In #FailedMovieTitleTranslations #artwiculate
Clearly, you want to let in the Right one and not the Sinister one, don’t you?
And from Vampires to Epitaphs:
RT @Wifsie RIP: My Lord Dexterous – Sitting at the right hand of God. #artwiculate
To get back to Artwiculate’s senses of the word, let’s pass through the sense of skilful with ones hands:
RT @asim7asim Dexterous : Handy Word Of The Day #artwiculate
Indeed it is!
RT @mazpowles The blokes in my town don’t understand why the girls call the handyman ‘Dexterous Dan’. Most of his carpentry is pretty shoddy.
Oh there were a number of plays on this sense of the WOTD today, but @mazpowles’s made me smile. And @runheidi’s:
RT @runheidi He’s dexterous in the kitchen; in the boudoir he can’t be beat. He’s superman under the covers, AND he can fold a fitted sheet!
RT @TOCSY1 Why was the robot so dexterous? Fine ~motor~ skills, of course.
RT @ten_ten_ten hands / sweet as sugar / dexterous dextrose #artwiculate
I tried but failed to find a way myself to combine dexterous dextrose and so salute @ten_ten_ten for that one.
This is a word game, so lets be dexterous with words now.
RT @chemingineer Dexterous with words but clumsy with feelings; he won #artwiculate but not her heart.
Ah, yes. The gift of the gab doesn’t necessarily promise anything else.
RT @twilobite22 He was incredibly dexterous of word, but a fisherman? Oy vey! In the end all we feasted on was a tale: the one that got away.
Here was a use of the word I didn’t see coming. A wonderful little epigram from @kado56
RT @kado56 This fabulous work of art I see unfold before my eyes/ a dexterous stitched embroidery upon a tissue of lies.
The next is a poem from @CreoleEloquence. See those hands, twisted and lost to skill.
RT @CreoleEloquence Stiffened knuckles greet this dark morn with scorn. Fist shadows scuffle til dawn. In the end, I found a dexterous soul. #artwiculate
I also liked this from @lawyergirl3
RT @lawyergirl3 Ineffable heart – knotted by dexterous hands ~a bowtie of serendipity
Finally I wanted to share this reminder from @SJHatzi
RT @SJHatzi While we complained of everything we cannot do, Christy Brown painted w/ his left foot. Who cannot be dexterous, tell me, who?
Nuff said.
No newcomers to either the game or the round-up today, so I’ll content myself with a general greeting to everyone.
Thank you all for your tweets and your attention. About 3 hours left to tweet and vote.
Dexterously handing you back to @TheSupercargo. Bye!

Phenakism: Deception; trickery.
————————————————
Greetings, Artwiculati! @TheSupercargo and his doppleganger are ready with another RT round-up – and this is no phenakism! This was clearly a word that struck a chord with many of us – with 13 pages of tweets and 3 hours left to go.
Mind you, it’s such an obscure word some of us were less than charmed. But while some (@TheSupercargo, for one) just moaned others used it appropriately. Viz:
RT @JonPowles Phenakism? You’re pulling my leg.
Humour and humorous illustrations were in my opinion more successful with this word. There was a raft to enjoy.
RT @TiddK At Phenakism Inc., the deceptionist always smiles sweetly at you and says “Mr Brown will see you in a moment”. #artwiculate
Loved “deceptionist” @TiddK!
RT @mazpowles Dear Ms Powles, Please excuse Delilah from the Maths test. She is suffering from a severe case of phenakism. Signed, my mum.
Bad judgement, Delilah! An English teacher might ALMOST let you off for that … but never a Maths teacher.
RT @Tralala56 As the train entered Phenakism, the passengers took out their decks of cards and started playing “Cheat”!
(And all the decks of cards were marked, of course.)
RT @twilobite22 The spy’s phenakism was so advanced, no one knew if he or she was a double or triple agent. #artwiculate
(And the spy him/her self was not 100% sure either.)
RT @californiakara Phenakism? I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
(Did you hear the one about the American who bought London Bridge under the impression he was getting Tower Bridge?)
RT @marcosarroyos Ancient used boat sales techinques : Phoenician phenakism
RT @lexiconehead If it smacks of phenakism, it’s a serial cereal ad campaign.
We really don’t like salespeople, do we?
Cheating partners come in for their share of the stick too.
RT @essence_me I did not mean to cheat on you, I suffer from Phenakism, 1 in 56 men suffer from it, they even have a support group: Tricks of Trade
I read @essence_me’s tweet & it coloured my view of the sincerity of @I2Haiku’s speaker in the next. See if it does the same to you.
RT @I2Haiku Please forgive my phenakism / I was afraid / if you knew / how I really felt / I’d never see you again #artwiculate #gogyohka
Setting those two against one another is just mean, I know. Here are some more uses that are more rather than less serious.
RT @chemingineer Life – God’s Phenakism. #artwiculate
RT @rafat4d A castle of sand named ‘trust’ / A tsunami named ‘Phenakism.
RT @sanmeera In Hinduism, it’s Maya. In phenakism, it’s trickery. #artwiculate
Last I looked no one had RT’d that tweet by @sanmeera. A pity. It’s a nice juxtaposition of -isms and a clever way of defining Maya.
Here’s another, very different, nice use of the -ism in the WOTD.
RT @the7minutestar Communism, Capitalism, Phenakism. #artwiculate
@SJHatzi took up my challenge to use as many earlier WOTDs as possible in a tweet and produced this fine definition of the WOTD.
RT @SJHatzi Phenakism: Odious, glib, ignoble, clancular, nefarious, noisome, pusillanimous, mercenary, vulpine, furtive, obdurate poltroons & caitiffs.
Wow, Fourteen WOTDs! It doesn’t beat my own 16 though. (*modestly polishing his fingernails*) Can anyone do better?!
I’ll pair @SJHatzi’s with @lagadu123′s now
RT @lagadu123 Phenakism: sounds hollow, tastes of humbug, looks like flannel, feels phony, smells of rat.
A lovely series of appropriate idioms – and all the five senses too.
@mortythemouth gave us a great tongue-twister, which I’ve been trying to read aloud today – attracting some curious gazes as a consequence.
RT @mortythemouth Politicians practice phenakism,packing panelists polls,pampering poor people,passing pamphlets,panhandling prophet philosophy. #Artwiculate
And still on the edge of Alliteration Fields, here’s a game reference to an earlier WOTD
RT @19ish Phirst Phenakism: Eden’s Anguine Asp #artwiculate
A visit to an alternative history next with @harrarp
RT @harrarp Early cinema! Phenakism: The phenakitoscope was designed by Yannis Z. Phenakis.
And while in tinsle town
RT @Wifsie RIP: The Phenakism twins – Liar, Liar. #articulate #movies
From the Movies to Nursery Tales now …
RT @kado56 “Oh Grandma – thought you could outfox us with THOSE ears!!” “Humph, this fennecism is not all it pretends” # phenakism
(I had to Google fennecism. You can too!)
Here’s great pun from @amanuel187 that seems to fit in with @kado56′s foxy tweet.
RT @amanuel187 Phenakism? All the wile.
@dsceiorg shared some WOTD rhymes.
RT @dsceiorg Phenakism / Cataclysm / Masochism / Catechism / Rhymes for my sex life #gogyohka #artwiculate
How often do you hear about phrenology? @FrankSiddarta made the connection, and I rather think he coined a new word along the way.
RT @FrankSiddarta I knew that phrenology was phenakism – I should never have let that phrenakist take a slice out of my skull.
RT @rascality The presenter at a behavioral neuroscience conference did not disclose his Freudian training; it was his private phenakism. #artwiculate
I love the idea of that Freudian presenter hugging his secret identity to himself.
My final tweet comes from @helacious. I think it’s really very clever.
RT @helacious The Phenomenology of Phenakism: it is what it appears to be, even when it is not.
There you have it. Another bumper haul of 26 brilliant tweets from the weird and wonderful collection of minds who play Artwiculate.
Greetings to @the7minutestar who has just joined the ranks of the Artwiculati. Greetings also to @sanmeera who has been playing a while, but now debuts in the Rt round-up. And a big “G’day” to @JonPowles, who I’ve not seen for awhile.
That’s all I have for you this time around, good people. Hope you enjoyed it. Handing back to @TheSupercargo now.

Anguine : Pertaining to, or or similar to snakes or serpents; snakelike
————————————————
Greetings, Artwiculati! And welcome to an RT round-up brought to you by the left fork of @TheSupercargo’s cleft tongue.
You think that was convoluted? Have you not read today’s twisted tweets, serpentine stories, worm-eaten tales or writhing words?
Given what I take to be a predominance of Artwiculati from the Judaeo-Christian tradition, we had a number of Biblical references today.
I’ve boiled them down to two. Viz:
RT @helacious Eve took heed of her anguine advisor/And skulked out of Eden sadder but wiser.
RT @harrarp Holy Moses! My rod has turned anguine again!
Loved them both, but perhaps especially @harrarp’s because it got us away from the Garden.
The other motif that came up very frequently today was the contrast between Ang- and Sang-. In its purest form:
RT @SJHatzi It’s hard to be sanguine about the anguine.
Indeed it is! Personally, I’m not frightened of them, I just like to be able to see the anguine in the room.
Of course, you might look at this pair from a grammatical point of view and then …
RT @PrernaMunshi “Sanguine”, I was…”Anguine”, I am ! #Sixwords #artwiculate
And here’s a bucolic, not to say riverine, scene from @chemingineer
RT @chemingineer The anguine river meandered and lost itself in the sanguine horizon. #artwiculate
Chemical engineering, rivers and blood coloured sludge = Hungary! Let me quickly distance myself from that bit of tastelessness.
The little pun-shaped space inside me was well-filled by contributions regarding today’s word.
RT @kado56 Man suffers sudden anguine attack after years of kicking his ‘ eels
RT @smeedha Anguine excitement: hissteria
RT @Gardencomet RIP Lady Anguine – she slithered into the pit
RT @pn8r He reminisced about his first girlfriend. She was anguine – she had a nice asp.
RT @lagadu123 I only realised he was anguine when he two-tined me.
(Geddit? )
Snake oil (a substance that has graced our tweets on more than one occasion in the past) also put in more than one appearance.
RT @I2Haiku Drink Anguine Absinthe, it’s not your usual snake oil. #Artwiculate
RT @bookdreamer Ladies! Anguine-oil guaranteed to put a rattle in your man’s roll #artwiculate
And as we move into the Tropic of Serpens. (I’m TRYING to reference Henry Miller!)
RT @ariandalen Ah, Mistress Anguine: she’ll wrap around you and squeeze tightly, until you’re breathless. #artwiculate
RT @MaxRaunchiness The anguine redhead took me to her place for some cold-blooded bondage. Serpentine was the safe word.
RT @californiakara Little Max (Raunchiness) is anguine. #thatisall
RT @profitsee Christine Anguine Aguilera new dance hit: Do The Ouroboros To Me #artwiculate
And to close off that, and since @profitsee’s tweet carried us to the edge of the gnostic:
RT @Eridanus On the Ecliptic, anguine Ophiuchus separates Serpens Caput from Serpens Cauda. “Snakes on an Astral Plane”?
There were several attempts today to “do” something with Snakes on a Plane; that was the one I felt most satisfactory.
Where next? Well more about snakes I suppose.
RT @FrankSiddarta Sanguine was a happy snake
I like that. Could be the first line of a children’s story. Perhaps not this though …
RT @TiddK The early bird gets the anguine – OUCH! – bye bye birdie… #artwiculate
Oh dear. I wonder if it was an Honduran Tangerine – no wait I mean …
RT @Phil_Rothwell The Anguine Tangerine was said to have a real bite to its flavour.. enough to give a person cottonmouth, and leave them rattled #artwiculate
And then there are those people who behave like snakes. Salesmen
RT @mrbob I’m tired of anguine salespeople. I think one might have left some of his shed skin in my office last week. #artwiculate
Politicians of a certain pursuasion.
RT @runheidi She’s in possession of qualities a good Republican needs: an anguine persona and a CV of misanthropic deeds. #artwiculate
Of course some people might choose to become snakes rather than something else.
RT @marcosarroyos If the truth were told, Gregor would have preferred to become anguine rather than an insect.
It’s all a bit of a gamble though, isn’t it?
RT @19ish After rolling anguine-eyes at the craps table for the 3rd time in a row, Sally silently slithered away, skinned again.
Some of our recurring themes have already be referenced in this round-up. Here are a couple more. The epitaph.
RT @Wifsie RIP: My Lord Anguine – He drowned in the Serpentine. #artwiculate
The train.
RT @Tralala56 As the train snaked towards Anguine, the passengers began to feel rather queasy.
Perdiccas in the dungeon
RT @dsceiorg Perdiccas, the prisoner is sanguine. “Oh, I was hoping to make a belt of him.†#artwiculate #anguine
And somewhwere in the realm of bad dreams, in another part of the dungeon, …
RT @mortythemouth Someone tried to anguine their way in here, sliding through the hole my mind, slithering in arteries of the sublime. #Artwiculate
RT @CreoleEloquence Anguine dreams slay peace/ This dark dry October morn/ Highway sounds slither dawn into ribbons/ #artwiculate #micropoetry #haiku
I’m going to finish off with a poem. I don’t often do this, but I really admire the way this scanned. Among other things. (It also appealed th the historian in me.)
RT @eilonwya10 Cleopatra, not feeling sanguine, aspired to expire; with assistance scaled & anguine, she achieved her last desire. #artwiculate
And that, my friends, is that. Big welcome greetings to new-hatched Artwiculati @CreoleEloquence & @mrbob
Greetings also to newcomers to the round-up @mortythemouth @PrernaMunshi & @profitsee who’ve all been playing Artwiculate awhile.
I’ll do another round-up for a few days. Look out for the next on Tuesday! Bye-bye *waves*. Back to @TheSupercargo now.
