Thanks Eva. Some of the credit goes to my mother – it’s amazing how much she remembers.

Personally I think the obscure corners of family cupboards are often the most interesting, though as I say I fully appreciate why my uncle (I suppose I can call him that) might not agree. I think it would have been better for Mum to have asked a neutral go-between to break the news and find out if the fellow wanted to take it further, but she is 93 now and understandably impatient. (I think she’ll reach her century, but she’s not so sure.)

As for getting siblings as adult it is not so easy. My husband was told, at the age of 50, that he had a brother when his mother died. Maybe it would have been less of a chock if he had not been the only child (or so he thought). But he has not tried to find the older brother, Leif Sixten. Not yet.
