I do agree. I think Burton is very gifted director and he’s made some wonderful films (Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the first Batman film and Corpse Bride come first to mind), but I think he can be patchy.

There were a lot of good bits in The Planet of the Apes, just as there were some good bits in Alice. In Alice, I thought Helena BC’s Red Queen was wonderful, for example, and I loved the way Alice kept changing size, but her clothes didn’t – and how she nevertheless stayed decent throughout! I wasn’t terribly impressed by Johnny Depp’s Hatter though.
