John Betjeman was very popular as a poet in his lifetime, though rather forgotten now – or perhaps that’s just me. He was the poet of the English middleclass and suburbia (not always kindly). The two lines for which he is probably most famous are:

Come friendly bombs and drop on Slough,
It isn’t fit for humans now.

…which gives a flavour of his style.
