Ha! Tea is to Britain and Ireland what coffee is to Sweden and Finland. We lived in Finland for two years and Sundsvall for 10, but "come from" Göteborg (that is my wife comes from Göteborg), so I know exactly what you mean about regional loyalties.

The process of selection you describe at Zoegas is the same for tea - very serious (but a bit ridiculous for outsiders). I can well see that it would be an interesting background for a novel. I'm going to have to read your book one of these days. :-)

The life as a coffeedrinker is not much easier, not even in Sweden. Different brands are preferred in the different parts of the country which can make travelling somewhat difficult for some people. Like my husband. In the north the brand "Löfbergs Lila" is considered outstanding. It is therefore used as one of the prices in the nationwide bingoprogram "Bingolotto" on TV. However if you live in the middle of the country, where Gevalia is ruling, it is not much of a price to win.

I used to live in Småland, a bit south but still under the force of queen Gevalia. Sometimes they sold a cheap brand of coffee in our local shop. It was named Zoegas and you most certainly did not offer it if you had guests at home. That would have been quite bad taste. Many years ago I moved to the south, Skåne, and after some time met my husband and got married. That was when I learned that the only coffe that is drinkable is - Zoegas. It is made in Helsingborg and comes in a lot of different flavours, made from different beans.

For a short while I worked at Zoegas as a consultant, not with coffee but in the economical department, and got some insight in the important daily testing of coffee. Sipping, smelling, spitting out. Quite an important part of the daily routine and done with great seriousness. It was during that time I got the idea to write a detective story, which takes place in England (Bä, bä svarta får). The inspiration from the coffee plant where I worked gave the spot for the plot: a coffeefactory in England. Maybee be an unusual idea ...

A long answer to your long and interrestring text John :) Me? I prefer instant coffee with milk.
